Design journey
This kitchen extension created a brighter and adaptable space for the client. There are plenty of surface areas and space for cooking, a breakfast bar for casual eating and then the dining area for entertaining in. Read on to find out what changes were made to achieve this.
Our client’s original kitchen was separate from their dining room, with the French doors located in the dining room. This meant the majority of the light was contained to just the dining area. The client wanted a brighter, open plan space and a layout that would flow better. We resolved this by taking down the partition wall dividing the kitchen and the dining room. We also installed light doors to allow even more light in.
We removed two old doorways, one to the back garden that was previously situated in the old kitchen and one leading to the dining from the hall. This allowed the dining table to be situated in the back of the room and also allowed us to install additional cabinets where the back door would have been. Access to the garden can be gained through the French doors in the dining area.
Continuing the theme of extra storage, we made sure the breakfast bar also doubled up as storage, with soft-close drawers and internal pull-out drawers. This hidden internal cutlery drawer meant the main drawer in the breakfast bar was streamlined and looked the same as the other cabinets.
The furniture the client chose was from the Remo range and came in gloss white. The worktops were Ash Grey quartz with matching upstands and these were highlighted by under cabinet lights. The glass splash back was a nice contrast to the white cabinets and white walls. The theme of grey and white was extended to the Egger flooring.
To keep a streamlined and modern look in the kitchen we integrated both the washing machine and the dishwasher. The modern look was continued through the feature light above the breakfast bar and the designer column radiator in the dining area.
